The Avengers Review

‘The Avengers’ (Avengers Assemble in the UK) is the latest adventure from the world of comics to hit our cinema screens across the world, but it is not just any old adventure it is an adventure of epic proportions, a film of epic proportions….To be quite frank this is the film spectacle of the year. There were a lot of dangers going into this film that may have hurt it more than your average superhero flick, the large cast and how to balance screen time and presence, the director (Joss Whedon has only directed one full length film, Serenity) and simply the scale of the film. However, believe me when I say that within 30 minutes to an hour all of those thoughts of issues are washed away by a slick, cool and perfectly constructed action film. To put it simply ‘The Avengers’ is going to go down as one of the best action films….ever. Read on for a *Spolier Free* review.

‘The Avengers’ follows a collective of superheroes brought together to fight and stop a force that threatens the very life of all the Earth…you know the everyday job in a superheroes life. The heroes that the group consists of primarily are Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson . Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and his organsation S.H.I.E.L.D do play a large part also but its specifically in bringing the group together. The horrible force that threatens earth is Loki (Tom Hiddleston), brother of Thor and he has an axe to grind with everyone and everything, and Loki is not alone as he has a force ready to attack Earth and subjugate its people.
If Hulk could describe the movie….It would involve the word smash!
Without coming across to bias or fan boy, ‘The Avengers’ does not have one bad bone in its body. It may not appeal to everybody because of its comic book backgrounds and stories but it is easily one of the best films I have ever seen. The reason this film works so well is that every aspect of the film is done perfectly and constructed perfectly and this all has to go down to Joss Whedon and the crew that put this film together. Joss Whedon’s skills have never been in doubt, but with only one other full length film to his name and that being the cult favourite ‘Serenity’ one could be forgiven for thinking maybe this was too big a deal for him to take on….Wrong. The pacing, the shots, the time with characters are all spot on and because they all work so damn well they come together just like ‘The Avengers’ to spawn a brilliant film.
Tom Hiddleston is a show stealer!
The other stand out feature of this film, Joss Whedon aside, is the action. The stuff you see in the trailer is nothing like you can expect in the film, there is so much more, it is so much better and it left me on the edge of my seat. If Michael Bay has a career in directing after this I would be surprised because Whedon has put to shame any and all of his work and right now I want to see a Whedon directed Transformers film. The climax of the film is what any comic book or action film fan could want from a film and it gives you so much more than you expect as well which is the icing on the cake. Even before the epic climax the entire storyline and plot is sprinkled with fights between characters, comedy and actual storytelling.
You would think with so much action in this film they would have left a lot of character or relationship development out…again wrong. What helps this film work so well is that there are no major peaks or troughs  of action until the climax, just enough to satisfy and each bit helps push the story forward. This leaves no time  for the film to feel dull or drawn out and when there is no action we are treated to great interactions between these characters we have grown to love over the years. My only concern in regards to the film is that those who have not ready the comics and not seen all of the films may struggle to understand references and plot points as it is a little heavy at the start, however this is a minor concern and unavoidable for a film like this.
Overall, from start to finish, ‘The Avengers’ is not only a fantastic action film but it is also a fantastic film overall. The acting is impeccable, Tom Hiddleston was the stand out for me as he just added a whole new layer to the Loki character. The action is immense and the directing is superb and everybody involved in making this film should get a pat on the back. Personally I know when I have seen a good film because I have two different states of reaction to a brilliant film. After ‘Inception’ I was speechless needing to ingest what I had just saw, but after I first saw ‘Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring’ my giddy excitement of what I had just watched could not stop me from telling anyone and everyone about it. ‘The Avengers’ was the latter and if I could use one word to describe how I felt after the film…Euphoric.
