In 1990 a two part TV adaptation of ‘IT’, a novel by acclaimed Horror author Stephen King, was screened and it brought us the most iconic clown of both big and small screens. Pennywise the Dancing Clown was incredibly brought to life by Tim Curry and a role I always thought would be impossible to successfully replace.
Now the internet lit up last night as stories surfaced from Variety that Will Poulter, of ‘We’re the Millers’ and ‘Maze Runner’ fame was to play the evil clown in the long gestating remake of the TV show. As the resident Horror buff of the Snooty Ushers, and a huge fan of the original adaptation I was admittedly surprised by the choice. Will Poulter is a great young actor with a lot of potential, but I’d have never thought they would go with a youthful option. Age won’t likely matter depending on the level of make-up they choose to use so it’s not an issue, but it is intriguing.
Regardless of age Poulter has a mammoth task on his hands in tackling a role that few others could see being filled by anybody other than Tim Curry. I sincerely hope they try to do it differently, otherwise they could be doomed to failure in trying to replicate it. Though in the hands of Cary Fukunaga we could be in for a treat, especially off the back of his success on True Detective.
So what do you think of the choice? Is it too bold? Who would you have liked to see in the role of Pennywise?
Though a canny topic for another Casting post, my choice would have been Eva Green. More on that though another time.
