Tom Hardy wants The Punisher

In an interesting recent interview with Collider Tom Hardy expressed some interest in playing Frank Castle, otherwise known as The Punisher. This was after he had to reluctantly withdraw from Warner Bros ‘Suicide Squad‘ due to scheduling conflicts with his role in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s upcoming film ‘The Revenant‘.

As intriguing a prospect it is for Hardy to play The Punisher, I imagine there could be some hitches to any potential deal. Primarily Hardy works quite a bit with Warner Bros, who are Disney/Marvels biggest competitors when it comes to the Superhero Genre. Would WB want to relinquish such a rising star to their rivals? I would think not but they may not have any choice in the matter.

The Punisher

Frank Castle has been portrayed three times by three different actors, Dolph Lundgren in 1989s ‘The Punisher‘, Thomas Jane in 2004s ‘The Punisher‘ and most recently by Ray Stevenson in 2008s ‘The Punisher: War Zone‘. None of the films resulted in any significant success, bar the cult following behind the latest film, so the property is ripe to be tackled again.

Rumours have been flying around about potential reboots of other Marvel properties including The Punisher since the rights to the characters reverted back to Marvel a couple of years ago. Other characters that found their way back to Marvel at the same time were Daredevil, who now has his own successful TV show on Netflix, Ghost Rider and Blade.

The current Marvel slate has little space to restart characters such as these, even in the realm of TV. Even though ‘Daredevil’ has been a runaway success on Netflix they already have AKA Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage on the way before a Defenders TV show unites them all together.

There are three things that Marvel can do in regards to these other characters in bringing them to the big or small screens.

1. They can outsource the characters to other studios whilst maintaining the rights

2. Keep the characters in reserve so that when the Defenders is finished they have a fresh set of characters not used in years,

3. Create standalone films that are in no way associated with the current MCU.

So do you think Tom Hardy is a good fit for The Punisher or is there somebody else you feel would do a better job? Check out our piece on who we think would be a good fit for The Punisher here. Let us know what you think in the comments!
