Fan Cast – Uncharted Movie

Following on from Dan’s quite excellent Fan Cast for Gears of War, you missed it what?  Then please get involved by clicking here.

Now, I would never call myself a gamer in any way given the fact that I had a playstation3 for 3 years before I actually played anything on it (it makes a great blu ray player).  The first game I played and actually completed was Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.  I loved every minute of it.  Followed by two equally brilliant sequels Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, these titles are ripe for a big screen adaptation.

While I have played plenty of games since, this has remained my favourite and I wait with baited breath for a film.

The series follows Nathan Drake (Nate), an explorer, adventurer and supposed distant descendant of Francis Drake, along with salty veteran hustler Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan, he goes after long-lost treasures and gets in some great adventures.  Kind of Indiana Jones in tone, with some mystic and even horror elements thrown in.

Film versions have been mooted for years, with David O. Russell attached to direct with Mark Wahlberg attached to star, even the great Nathan Fillion has been mentioned, but to date nothing has materialised.

So, with the Nathan Drake collection just released on the Playstation 4 platform and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End coming in early 2016, I can think of no better time to put together my fantasy cast, so without further ado, here we go:  The film would follow the plot of the first game as Drake goes in search of The Lost Treasure of El Dorado.

James Roday as Nathan Drake

Rodaychar_26000Nathan ‘Nate’ Drake is a great character, wise cracking and sarcastic and highly intelligent.  Think Indiana Jones crossed with John McClane, now I normally hate comparisons like that, but here is works pretty well.  As I mentioned before, he is a supposed long distant relation to Sir Francis Drake and it is this legendary explorer whose legacy forms the plot of the first game.

Driven by his search for the truth as well as the riches that history is hiding, Nate is the perfect protagonist, easy to like, which, for me is essential if you are going to spend 11+ hours investing in his adventures.

Now, James Roday might seem like a bit of a strange choice, given that most of you wont have any idea who he is.  Roday played Shawn Spenser, the fake psychic detective in the brilliant Psych (USA Network, 2006-14).

He would have the wise cracking, sarcastic side covered and will make Nate instantly likable to the viewer.  He would need to put some size on, but that should be easy enough, while he might not have the immediate star power to drive a franchise, when he is paired with who I have in mind for Sully I think they will make a memorable partnership.

Dennis Quaid as Victor Sullivan

Dennis QuaidSullyVeteran fortune hunter and full-time grumpy old man, Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan is like a father figure to Nate.  Coming across a teenage Nate as they are both trying to steal Francis Drake’s ring, they form a father/son bond that is stronger than either of them want to admit.

Sully, while protective of Nate often gets him into trouble.  Among Sully’s weaknesses you can count booze, gambling and woman.  He has a keen sense for treasure and his slightly loose morals make him perfect foil for Nate.

Dennis Quaid is perfect for this, as he has gotten older he has perfected the grizzled look and a smirk that will be spot on for Sully.

I have been a huge fan of this actor for a long time and he would have been my ideal choice for Hal Jordan in a Green Lantern movie, but by the time one rolled around he was just too old.

Sarah Michelle Gellar as Elena Fisher

gellarElena_Fisher's_cameraElena starts off as a TV reporter helping Nate track down his links to Sir Francis Drake, but ends up as his love interest and partner.  She is tenacious and will go to great lengths to get her story.

She is self-reliant and doesn’t always need rescuing by Nate and proves herself more than a worthy partner for him.

Now there is no doubt that she can handle the action scenes given her legendary status as Buffy, but I think she would play brilliantly alongside Roday and the chemistry would be fantastic.

Her roles have been criminally light on the ground of late, so it would be great to see her back on the big screen.

Malcolm McDowell as Gabriel Roman

210px-Malcolm_McDowell_LFromanRoman is a rival treasure hunter to whom Sully owes money.  He is nowhere near as talented as Drake and hires mercenaries to help him on his quest.  While appearing to be in control of things, it quickly becomes apparent that his greed has clouded his judgement.

Malcolm McDowell can play this type of role in his sleep, a veteran of several dozen films, he is probably most famous for his role in A Clockwork Orange, but he sticks in my memory as the guy who killed Captain Kirk.  He can do devious and unstable very well, which is perfect for Roman.

Benjamin Bratt as Atoq Navarro

MV5BMTUwNDIwOTI5N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDcwMjQyNg@@._V1_UY317_CR14,0,214,317_AL_ (1)SkinatoqNavarro starts off as the head of a team of mecenaries who are hired by Roman to aid him in his quest to beat Nate to El Dorado, but he is so much more.  A skilled treasure hunter in his own right he is quickly revealed as the real threat to Drake.  Using Roman as a puppet to his own ends he is much more dangerous and it is Navarro that faces off against Nate in the final, heart stopping show down.

Benjamin Bratt is, for me quite an under rated actor.  He first came to my attention as Det. Rey Curits in Law and Order.  His movie roles have been criminally few and far between and most recently he stepped in to replace Al Pacino and lend his voice to the villain in the brilliant Despicable Me 2.

He has the size and will bring suitable menace and pose a substantial threat to Drake.

With 2 more great games to pull from, a franchise is ripe for the making here.  I hope you enjoyed my choices and let me know what you think or who you would cast.

Thanks for reading x
