Reviews, The Snooty Ushers Christmas

56 Days, 56 Christmas Films: Day 51 – We’re No Angels

So, yesterday was pretty dire. Time for a bonafide classic, although it’s a bit of a short review due to time constraints.

And today it’s…

20th December, Day 51

We’re No Angels (Michael Curtiz, 1955)

We're No Angels

Joseph, Albert, and Jules (Humphrey Bogart, Aldo Ray, and Peter Ustinov) are three prisoners serving life sentances in Devil’s Island prison. They escape and manage to make it to a French town, and befriend the Ducotel family. They offer to visit the roof of the Ducotel’s store, but that ‘s just a ruse so that rob the store and escape overnight. The three criminals soften to the family though, and share a great Christmas dinner. When Andre Trochard (Basil Rathbone) arrives from Paris, he plans to take over the store. Will Joseph, Albert, and Jules be able to save the store, the family, and the village?

Humphrey Bogart didn’t make too many comedies, but he really had a knack for them. This is a classic, Rathbone is brilliant as the villain – and he is a villain. The tagline to this film was: “A strangler… A swindler… A safecracker… Yet you’ll love them!” and you really will after this film.

Overall I give this:

4 Gold Rings Out of 5

A fantastic movie. If you want an antidote to schmaltz, check this out.

Until next time, stay gold, Ponyboy, stay gold. See you soonish.

that's all folks
