Reviews, The Snooty Ushers Christmas

56 Days, 56 Christmas Films: Day 53 – Babes In Toyland

So, I’m getting towards the end of my countdown, and I’m focusing on some oldies, and it doesn’t get much older than Laurel and Hardy!

And today it’s…

22nd December, Day 53

Babes In Toyland (Gus Meins and Charles Rogers, 1934)

Stan and Ollie work at the toyshop in Toyland, a place inhabited by fairy tale characters. They live with the old lady who lives in a shoe, with Bo Peep. The Cat with the Fiddle and 3 Little Pigs are their next door neighbours. The meanest man in the world Silas Barnaby owns the mortgage on the house (well, boot) and threatens to turf them out into the street if they can’t pay. He wants to marry Little Bo Peep, but she refuses his advances. Instead, when the Pied Piper helps her find her sheep – for the fifth time this month! – they fall in love and get married. When Stan and Ollie get fired from the toy shop for making 100 6ft tall soldiers for Santa instead of 600 1ft ones, it looks like the family will be kicked out the house. They attempt to burgle Barnaby, but get caught and exiled to Bogeyland. Silas agrees to drop the charges if Bo Peep will marry him – can Stan and Ollie save the day?

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy in Babes In Toyland

I find the Laurel and Hardy to be joyous, delightful treats. They always make me laugh. The whole sequence of them trying to burgle Barnaby had me in stitches, especially the “A Christmas present.. in July?” line from Barnaby that shows just how sillt there entire plan was. Also, there’s a bizarre Mickey Mouse (played by a monkey) living with the Cat with the Fiddle:

The Snooty Ushers do not condone either mouse on cat violence or the colourisation of old films… but this was the best gif I could find.

And, how can you not love this face…

Overall, I give this

5 gold rings

5 Gold Rings Out of 5!

You didn’t really expect me to be subjective when it came to Laurel and Hardy did you?

We’re nearly there! Next up it’s MEET JOHN DOE!

Until next time, stay gold, Ponyboy, stay gold. See you soonish.

that's all folks
