The Snooty Ushers read their tea leaves to predict who will walk away with the supporting acting Oscars!

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages, The Snooty Ushers proudly present to you our 2017 Oscar predictions! We have already crowned our Best Film of 2016 (it can be found here) but we are not the only prestigious body giving out awards. This Sunday night is the 89th Academy Awards, but if you can’t wait for the Jimmy Kimmel hosted show, we have predicted the winners for you, right here!

We have already picked out who we think will win the best screenplay awards (they can be found here). Over the next few days we will predict the leading actor categories and best director, followed by the best picture on Sunday itself, but for now, here are our predictions for…

Best Actress in a Supporting Role

And the nominations are…supporting-actress

  • Viola Davis (Fences)
  • Naomie Harris (Moonlight)
  • Nicole Kidman (Lion)
  • Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures)
  • Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea)

And our predictions are…

James
Who I want to win: Naomie Harris. She was great in 28 Days Later, she’s great as Miss Moneypenny in the Bond films…she’s just great.

Who I think will win: Viola Davis. A powerful performance that has already won awards when she performed it on stage. Fences has issues (most people agree it feels like a play on screen rather than a movie), but Davis would be a worthy winner.

Dan
Who I want to win: Viola Davis. I’ve not even seen Fences thanks to stupid UK release dates, but even the snippet of Viola’s performance we see in the trailer is enough to see she is as fantastic as ever. She deserves the award for being the only decent thing about Suicide Squad anyway.

Who I think will win: Viola Davis. Because she’s the bomb. However don’t overlook Michelle Williams, anybody who can bring me close to tears with a performance has a chance at winning.

Dave
Who I want to win: Naomie Harris.  Agree with James, she is just great

Who I think will win: Viola Davis

Welshy
Who I want to win: Michelle Williams I think she is a solid actress, who packed so much into her character Randi  that I was stunned she wasn’t in the film more.

Who I think will win: Viola Davis a tough one because Naomie Harris is also deserving. However I feel that Davis performance in Fences outshine that of her co-star Mr Washington and should of been Best Actress.

Rich
Who I want to win: Naomie Harris. Going to agree with the guys above. She’s great in everything I’ve seen her in and Moonlight is no exception.

Who I think will win: Viola Davis. Honestly I would have had her pegged for best actress considering she shares the same amount of screen time as Denzel and is at some points better than him throughout the film. It’s a shame to see Viola in the supporting category but at least she’s going to win it.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role

And the nominations are…supporting-actors

  • Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)
  • Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water)
  • Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea)
  • Dev Patel (Lion)
  • Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals)

And our predictions are…

James
Who I want to win: Dev Patel. Like Naomie Harris, another British actor I want to see win, but I don’t think will. The kid out of Skins really has grown into a real screen presence. And he’s still only 26!

Who I think will win: Michael Shannon. I thought Nocturnal Animals was a great piece of work, and was very surprised it didn’t receive more nominations. Michael Shannon was outstanding (as was Aaron Taylor Johnson, who sets himself up as a proper actor), plus he has a track record of great performances, and when the voters remember Nocturnal Animals I think they will vote for him, so he will win it.

Dan
Who I want to win: Michael Shannon. Such a strong field of contenders which contain two of my favourite actors, and one who is on a rise to greatness. But it’s about time Shannon got the recognition for the work he has so diligently put out there, and we all know the Oscars don’t always pick the best candidate.

Who I think will win: This is one of the hardest categories to read this year. There is merit and a good case for each nominee, but if Shannon doesn’t win it’s got to be Lucas Hedges.

Dave
Who I want to win: Michael Shannon. Outstanding turn in a great film that has been criminally overlooked.

Who I think will win: Mahershala Ali.  Just a hunch…

Welshy
Who I want to win: Jeff Bridges –Hell or High water, no need to say more.

Who I think will win: This is really hard to call. I am honestly not sure who could take it, I think it may be Dev Patel or Michael Shannon

Rich
Who I want to win: Jeff Bridges. Hell or High water did everything right from start to finish and I would love it to steal some Oscars this year.

Who I think will win: Mahershala Ali. This guy can seemingly do know wrong at the moment, he’s hot property right now and everyone is wanting a piece. Expect him to pop up a lot in the future.

We’ll be back later today with our Best Director predictions. Let us know what you think we’ve got right, what we’ve got wrong, and who you think will take home the golden statues on Sunday night.

Until next time, stay gold Ponyboy, stay gold. See you soonish.
